The MROI's capabilities for imaging geosynchronous satellites

چکیده
Interferometry provides the only practicable way to image meter-scale structure in geosynchronous satellites. This capability represents a unique commercial opportunity for astronomical interferometry, but to date no interferometer has been able to make an image of such a satellite. We discuss the challenges of imaging these objects and present results of sensitivity calculations and imaging simulations which show that the Magdalena Ridge Observatory Interferometer is likely to be well-suited to this application. Our preliminary results suggest that a significant proportion of GEO targets may be accessible and that it may be possible to routinely extract key satellite diagnostics with an imaging capability that would be able to distinguish, for example, 70 cm features on a 5-meter satellite bus and payload, 30 cm features on a 2meter satellite bus or similarly sized structure, as well as precise quantitative information on much larger structures such as 10 m long solar panels. Optimised observation and data reduction strategies are likely to allow these limits to be improved in due course.

Shadow imaging efforts at MIT Lincoln Laboratory
The technique of shadow imaging allows one to take pictures of distant objects that are beyond the reach of the largest ground-based astronomical telescopes. The technique relies on the fact that stars are nearly ideal point sources and are conveniently located behind man-made deep space objects, such as satellites. As a space object passes in front of a star (an “occultation event”), the objec...

This paper proposes a methodology to design a regional navigation system using geosynchronous satellites and stratospheric airships. One important factor in designing a navigation system is dilution of precision. We design a regional navigation system based on the simulations of the system’s dilution of precision. The system would consist of geosynchronous orbit satellites and stratospheric air...
متن کاملInternet Routing over LEO Satellite Constellations
Satellite constellations ooer interesting perspectives for Internet traac routing, since they beneet from a worldwide coverage and do not have the main drawback of geosynchronous satellites : propagation delay. However, because of their low altitude, LEO satellites are in constant motion and exhibit speciic issues for routing. This article presents a general architecture applicable to the integ...

Remote sensing using small spacecraft arising from multi-objective economic activity problems is getting more and more developed. These satellites require very accurate pointing to specific locations of interest, with high reliability and small latency. The space borne imaging systems always attempted to achieve the highest ground resolution possible with the available technology at the given t...
متن کاملOptimizing orbital debris monitoring with optical telescopes
Continued growth in the orbital debris population has renewed concerns over the long-term use of space. Debris poses an increasing risk to manned space missions and operational satellites; however, the majority of debris large enough to cause catastrophic damage is not being tracked and maintained in a catalog. Passive optical systems hold great promise to provide a cost-effective means to moni...
